Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and that means it’s time for fun, festive activities! One of our absolute favorite traditions is the “disguise a turkey” project. It’s a creative way to get kids excited about the holiday while also sneaking in a bit of art and imagination.
This project is simple enough for even the youngest artists, yet open-ended enough to challenge older kids too. It’s all about helping our feathered friend avoid becoming Thanksgiving dinner by transforming him into something else entirely! Let’s get those creative juices flowing!
Unleash Your Creativity
First, gather your supplies! You’ll need a turkey template (easily found online or drawn yourself!), crayons, markers, colored pencils, construction paper, glue, glitter, and anything else that sparks your creativity. The more options, the better! Don’t forget safety scissors if your child will be cutting.
Think outside the box! How can you transform your turkey? Maybe he can become a superhero with a cape and mask, or a princess with a crown and flowing gown. Perhaps he’s a rock star with a guitar, or an astronaut ready for liftoff. Let your child’s imagination take the lead.
Consider turning your turkey into an animal. Could he be a sneaky fox, a cuddly bear, or even a fierce lion? Use construction paper to create ears, tails, and other animal features. Get creative with the colors and patterns to truly bring your animal turkey to life!
Don’t be afraid to use everyday objects! Glue on buttons, yarn, feathers, or even dried pasta to add texture and dimension to your disguised turkey. These unexpected materials can create unique and eye-catching effects that will make your project stand out.
Once your disguised turkey is complete, give him a name and write a short story about his new identity. Where is he going? What adventures will he have? This adds another layer of fun and encourages storytelling skills, making it a truly well-rounded activity.
